Cushing’s syndrome (CS) is a hormonal disorder characterized by chronic high levels of circulating cortisol. Patients treated for CS develop chronic adrenal insufficiency (AI) and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction. Long-term treatment with glucocorticoids (GC) is mandatory to overcome AI. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) -21, a key regulator of metabolism, has a bidirectional relationship with GC that bypasses the negative feedback of the HPA axis. In th...

Mora M. , Granada M. , Puig R. , Roca M. , Palomera E. , Olaizola I. , Julian M. , Serra-Prat M. , Puig-Domingo M.

Introduction: Ghrelin gene products ghrelin and obestatin have apparent opposite orexigenic and anorexigenic effects, although this latter has not been firmly demonstrated for obestatin in humans. So far, no information has been reported in relation to its potential association to metabolic syndrome (MS).Objective: To study obestatin concentrations in relation to nutritional parameters and eating behavior in old women. Methods: One ...

Prevalence of germline mutations of AIP gene in sporadic aggressive somatotropinomas

Puig-Domingo M , Oriola J , Halperin I , Mora M , Diaz-Soto G , Perales M J , Alvarez-Escola C , Lucas-Morante T , Bernabeu Ignacio , Marazuela Monica

Most kindreds of familial isolated pituitary adenomas (FIPA) with mutated AIP develop somatotropinomas, characterized by an aggressive clinical phenotype including early age at diagnosis, large tumours and frequent invasiveness. In non-family cases, the prevalence of AIP mutations in pituitary adenomas is lower than 10%. There is no information of AIP prevalence in isolated somatotropinomas characterized by poor response to conventional treatment.Aim: To...
